Though it is really early, I take a look at the players who have hit the ground running and those who haven’t amongst those who switched clubs in the transfer season.
Simon Mignolet: Liverpool spent £9m to replace Pepe Reina and looks like a bargain already. He saved a penalty against Stoke on his debut. Those 3 points gave the Merseyside club a huge lift. He excellent shot-stopping has helped Liverpool pick up valuable points.
Mesut Ozil: The biggest signing on transfer deadline day at £42.5 million. That signing has lifted Arsenal as they sit on top of the Premier League. Arsenal look like world-beaters with Ozil in their side. Arsenal haven’t paid £42.5 for Ozil, they have paid that money to build an Arsenal side around him.
Christian Eriksen: Spurs managed to acquire the services of a really talented playmaker for just £11.8m. He has outshone other expensive signings like Erik Lamela and I have absolutely no doubt that he will be a superstar in a Spurs shirt.
Mathieu Flamini: Some Arsenal fans are saying that his signing is more important than Mesut Ozil. It feels like Flamini never left Arsenal. He has provided the Arsenal midfield that grit which they have lacked. The best part is that he arrived on a free transfer.
Alvaro Negredo: The Spaniard cost less than Fernandinho and Jovetic, but he has made a bigger impact than both of them combined. He has already scored 9 goals in all competitions for City. It looks like Negredo will form a better partnership with Aguero than Jovetic or Dzeko.
Erik Lamela: He cost Spurs around £30 million. However, he has had a struggling start to his career at White Hart Lane. He has found himself behind Andros Townsend in the pecking order. The player who was brought in to fill the void left by Gareth Bale, however, has age on his side as he is just 21.
Iago Aspas: The former Celta Vigo man had a good pre-season with Liverpool. But, he has struggled in the Premier League. Maybe, he lacks the physique to play in the Premier League. Having started the first few games of the season, dip in his form and the return of Suarez, Aspas has been relegated to the bench.
Marouane Fellaini: Manchester United needed creative midfielders, but David Moyes spent £27.5 million on the Belgian. Though he has the ability of dominate the midfield area, Fellaini lacks the creativity needed to unlock stubborn defences. Lack of creativity is one reason why Manchester United have struggled so far.
Stevan Jovetic: The Montenegrin has seen his start at Eastlands hampered by injury. He always had a poor fitness record. So, the decision to spend £22 million on him looks like a poor one. If he stays injury free, Jovetic can really light up the Premier League. He is known for his dribbling, technical ability, and creativity.
Willian: The Brazilian made a poor decision to join Anzhi Makhachkala. Anzhi chose to transfer list their whole squad, including Willian. A lot of clubs were interested but Chelsea won the race after they agreed a £30 million fee. He has looked poor whenever he has played. Looks like a monumental waste of a talented player, and an even bigger waste of money.
